Research in Biomathematics: A Guide to Funding from the U.S. Army Research Office

Organizers:
Luis Sordo Vieira (University of Florida), Reinhard Laubenbacher, University of Florida
Description:
The proposed workshop is intended to help faculty from HBCUs, MSIs, and smaller teaching-focused institutions to successfully compete for research grants from the Army research office (ARO) Biomathematics Program and perform cutting-edge research, and mentor students at their institutions. This workshop builds on our established framework and resources from a similar workshop at the SIAM Life Sciences Meeting in 2024. We will establish a framework for a network of mentors and mentees for the purpose of grant proposal preparation and general career mentoring. We will recruit faculty members from mathematics and other suitable departments at HBCUs, MSIs, and smaller teaching-focused institutions who will receive partial financial support to attend the workshop. Tentative program: Presentations by Drs. L. Sordo Vieira, R. Laubenbacher and Dr. V. Pasour, the ARO Biomathematics program director . 30 minute break Presentations on career development and grant preparation skills . Q&A session Networking session to pair current PIs with potential applicants to the program. Informal networking event, followed by dinner. We request a 4-hour time slot that does not overlap with plenary talks. We are also planning a reception and will need to discuss with organizers catering options and location. This workshop and its format has been discussed with the lead organizers of SMB Annual Meeting who are in support
Diversity Statement:
This workshop is intended to enhance the ability of faculty members from HBCUs and MSIs to apply and acquire scientific funding for their research programs. It has a direct benefit towards diversity and inclusion by potentially increasing the resources and training at schools serving minority populations.
